My first memory was of a slap, hard across the face: the sting on my cheek and the jarring of my bones as I slammed back into my bed. It was my dad who had hit me.
I had been four.
Most of my memories were much of the same and no one ever saw, no one ever fought to help, no one ever cared.
Then we moved.
My new neighbor cared, rescued the twelve-year-old I had been from a beating. Always thought I'd suffer the nightmare alone, I was wrong.
Mace Donati saved me that day in all the ways a person could be saved.
And his daughter, Mia, she became the friend I had always wanted, my conscience when my own faltered, the light that led me home when I had lost my way.
The girl who grew into the only woman I would ever love.
But when you realize you're more like your father than the good people who took you in and gave you a home, the only way to return their kindness is to let them go.
I let them go, got so far lost in the shadows I couldn't remember who I was anymore. Mia never gave up on me. She fought for me, kept the light on so I'd find my way back.
And when I did, life threw us a curveball. I had to hurt Mia in order to save her.
But when my past comes back to haunt me and I almost lose her, I'm ready to fight for her...fight to find a way back into her heart while keeping the demons from my past from finishing what they started.

“Fiore proves herself to be a fantastic writer with this book. The writing is superb. She is able to pull the reader in and never let them go. She keeps you on your toes and you never know what's around the corner. It's not very often you can read a book and go "Dang. She can write."- 5 Star Review from Avid Readers Amy Reviews
“Wow just wow. The story spans years and it is done brilliantly, it's easy to follow and flows naturally through the years that it spans. The characters are some of my fav of the year so far….” - 5 Star Amazon Reviewer
“This book is just one of those reads that pulls you in from the word go and reduce you to tears in chapter one!!! The book will continue to pull at you from all ends as you read on.” - 5 Star Review from Bookhooked
REVIEW
AMIE'S 5 STAR REVIEW
It has been 3 years or so since I read a book by this author and that is only because once I started blogging it was hard to keep up with my TBR. All along I have always shared and promoted anything LA has done because I recall enjoying her writing and characters very much. The synopsis made me HAVE to jump on this tour and I am so glad I did. This book is amazing - the emotions were so real , the twists and turns great , the suspense and the ending WOW. I loved how it was broken down into 4 parts and as always I love the dual POV. As I read I was determined to review by parts but of course as each part ended I was either in bed or only putting the book down because I had to be part of humanity !! So I will do my best but words can not do justice - if the synop intrigues you there is an absolute chance you will be amazed by the whole story - I was.
Part 1 - OMG amazing , I love the whole childhood friends and the way Mace took in Cole and how Cole and Mia's friendship formed. Cole's childhood sucked and it was heartbreaking to read about yet he was very lucky to have the neighbors he did and the chances he did at happiness. Poor Mia , the ugly duckling , younger than Cole and always so tuned in to him. She may have been lacking a mother but her DAD was phenomenal and she had aunt Dee and a like-an-uncle Dylan. She loved princesses and everything fairytale-ish and never wanted for anything until Cole was removed from her life.
Part 2 & 3 kind of blur for me since at that point I couldn't put the book down. I just wanted everything back to normal and I thought maybe the faster I read the faster that would happen ! No such luck. After years in juvie for putting and end to his childhood horrors Cole comes out and instead of embracing his loved ones he pushes them away finding himself working for trouble and turning out to be like the man he hated - his father. Mia is crushed as is her dad , they cannot find a way to reach Cole yet they never give up. Persistence pays off for Mace but Mia has to do some serious work to get back into Cole's circle. He is trying so hard to keep his distance and she is relentless. Some of the things she does , the little gifts she leaves at the garage , OMG had me laughing !! During these parts there is some major behind the scenes action going on , we don't know who or what but we do know that Cole and Mace are looking into some dangerous things. There is much heartache and you are left wondering how deep this goes and will anyone get to the bottom of it without anymore tragedy.
Part 4 WOW - I cannot put into words the amount of turmoil this part had me in. The danger and suspense. The realizations and assumptions. I was in a whirlwind and even though we finally had our Mia and Cole , which was super freakin hot !! , we had a crapload of hurdles to jump and I mean a crapload. What really happened with Mace, what did they find , who is behind it all and who the heck can you trust. After we brave the choppy waters we get a nice relaxing vacation BUT just wait , what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas !! Not quite but WOW it is good !! The epilogue was sweet and hot and happy and I am wiped out now and need a nap to recover !!
