Sixteen-year-old Claire McBride just witnessed a brutal murder at the hands of someone she knew, someone she thought she could trust. Now she’s alone, afraid and desperate to put as many miles as possible between herself and the killer. Seeing no other options, she flees her home town of Galena, leaving behind everything and everyone she’s ever held dear.

Run for your life…

Carter Emerson's whole world has come crashing down around him. He woke to the news his best friend, Claire has gone missing without a trace, and there’s nothing he can do about it. Finding out her car was abandoned in the busy city of Chicago, he and his brother can't help but fear the worst… With no solid suspects or leads, it looks like Carter’s worst nightmare could come true, and Claire’s disappearance may turn into a cold case.

Run for your life…

With the killer at her heels, Claire has no choice but to leave Carter in the dark. She can’t risk his safety just because she misses the sound of his voice… But will the run of Claire’s life be worth it in the end? Or will her past catch up with her no matter how hard she tries to escape it?

Excerpt-

I open my mouth to ask what he means by ‘a few minutes’, but lose the thought when I see the back end of Claire’s blue PT Cruiser peeking out from around an old Ford truck. I know it’s Claire’s from thirty yards away because I see the guitar-shaped magnet on the bumper that says ‘Grand Ole Opry’ that she bought this last summer when the two of us took a road trip to Nashville together. The guitar sits right next to the black, glittery bumper sticker that says, “I brake for unicorns” in purple lettering.
Something in my brain snaps and I take off running for the car. I blow past Adam and nearly trip or run into at least three cars on my way there, but I don’t stop running until I’m at the driver’s side door. My whole body shakes with adrenaline and the bottom drops out of my stomach when I see Claire isn’t there—not that she would be. It was just a gut reaction for me to hope that maybe, by some act of God, she would be curled up in the backseat taking a nap.
I let out a shaky breath and back up a few feet from the car, trying to catch my breath. Claire’s gone, I tell myself for the millionth time. She’s gone, she’s gone, she’s gone.
“Don’t wait up,” Adam says once he makes it to my side.
“Where’d they find it?” I ask breathlessly.
“In an alley, parked behind a dumpster.” He must see me shudder because his eyes soften a little and he reaches out to squeeze my shoulder. “She wasn’t anywhere around, Carter. Don’t give up hope.”
I never had hope to begin with, I think to myself pessimistically.
“Union Station was only a couple blocks away,” he says. “Maybe she ran?”
“Claire McBride? Run away from home?” I say incredulously. “Please.”
He snorts and shrugs. “You never know.”
“What are we doing here?” I ask. “Isn’t this a little above your pay level?”
He nods affirmatively, adding, “True…Claire’s a minor, so the FBI has taken over her case. But Dad has friends, so they’re keeping him, and therefore me, in the loop. Which means you, little man, will have all the details of the case as they unfold.”
I nod. “You didn’t answer my question.”
He blushes. “Well, uh, an agent will be coming to pick this baby up in a couple, but I thought…you should get a look at it first.”
“Me?” I stare at him. “Why me? Why do I have to go stomping on the FBI’s toes?”
He rolls his eyes. “You’re such a goodie goodie. If she did run away or if she needs help, maybe she would have left a clue. You know Claire better than anyone! Better than Dad, better than me, better than her own parents. I figure…if she left any sort of evidence, you’d see it before anyone else did.”
He could be right, I guess. Claire and I do have a special bond. We always seem to know what the other is thinking or feeling without ever speaking a word. This is so different, though. It’s a lot harder to pick up what someone was planning just by how they left their car. “This is fourteen kinds of illegal, isn’t it?” I ask, but really I’m just trying to talk myself out of agreeing with him.
“I wouldn’t necessarily say ‘fourteen kinds’ of illegal…” Adam says.
