Author: L.A. Casey
Genre: Contemporary, Romance, New Adult
Publisher: Montlake Romance
Release Date: July 19
Like nothing you have ever read from L.A. Casey before, a story of loss, love, and finding yourself in the darkest of times.
He was my best friend, my best not-really-big-brother and my best protector. He was my best everything. He was mine.
Coming home is hard for Lane. Hard because Harry, her beloved uncle, has died suddenly, but also because of him. Kale.
Kale Hunt has been her best friend since childhood. But it was never that simple. He was Lane’s reason for leaving home and moving to New York. Seeing him with someone else, in love with someone else, shouldn’t have hurt. But it did. It really, really did. So she upped sticks and left, started a new life and cut herself off from her past.
But now she’s back and all the feelings are right there. As if she had never left.
Emotions are running high for everyone, and tragedy has a funny way of bringing people together. But is Lane reading the signs right? Are they still just friends, or is there something more?

I pushed my glasses up the bridge of my nose as I reread the letter from my brother for the millionth time since I received it two days ago. It stated two things. One, my uncle passed away. My godfather and dear friend was gone. And two, I had to go home.
I wasn’t jumping for joy about either fact.
I looked up from the worn paper Lochlan’s letter was scribbled upon and gazed out the window of the train I was sitting inside.
The Yorkshire’s countryside passed me by, and in seconds I was lost in the green beauty of it. Unfortunately, the glamour of the never-ending dreamlike view wasn’t enough to mask the pain in my chest. The horrendous agony quickly brought me back to the present, and it screamed that I couldn’t run from it.
Not this time, Lane, a sour voice in my mind hissed. You can’t escape this.
Nothing beautiful to the naked eye or soothing to the delicate ear could erase the inevitable reality I would soon have to face head on. I shifted in my seat as my stomach roiled at the thought of what the next few days entailed.
Why did this have to happen? I glumly wondered.
AMIE'S 5 STAR REVIEW
So this author is enough of a reason for me to jump on this book - I have been a fan and following the Slater Bros for years - it seems lifetimes !! BUT the list just kept growing for me - The cover - the title - the synop - I mean seriously - I am the biggest fan of childhood besties finding each other again and finally getting it right - the chick takes off for years and now has to come home - there has been family tragedy and the drama and heartache only intensifies - as you read we get flashbacks of childhood up until she leaves - it is mainly set in the UK which means awesome words that make me giggle - there is a bit of humor splashed in here and there - I can go on but I will stop there !! This book couldn't do me wrong if it tried !!
OK Lane was a bit much , a big time crier , a runner BUT wow Kale really did pull a crap move more than once so I get most of that. She left to have space , to escape and try to move on , start over. Her family was not happy so the only person she could turn to and keep in touch with was her Uncle Harry. They had a connection , it was deep and amazing. We see a glimpse of it when the book starts and in some flashbacks. Sadly the family tragedy that brings Lane home also takes another person from her. You will find Lane has lost quite a bit in the past 6 years. It was heartbreaking to read Lane facing her family after all those years. Heartbreaking to read about this family so torn from tragedy but also trying to heal the hole that had been. Then we have Kale - WOW - he was the typical best friend boy , stuck up for Lane , scared everyone away with the help of her big bros and yet never realized how Lane's feelings for him changed , never admitting what he felt which caused them both to make decisions that changed lives drastically. Sadly with Lane gone things never got better for Kale - that is a whole other sack of deep heartache that will have you needing tissues !!
BUT long story short - here we are - present time - the chance for everyone to make things right - realizing life is not to be wasted - chances need to be taken and time should be cherished. Will Lane , her family and Kale be able to right wrongs and have the happiness they all deserve ?? I enjoyed this story and felt all emotion and devoured every word !! Looking forward to anything else LAC has to offer !!
