The Moth and the Flame by B.B. Reid
Release Date: May 20, 2019

The Moth and the Flame, the second romantic standalone in the When Rivals Play series by B.B. Reid.

THE FLAME
Here lies Louchana Valentine. She was a homeless, orphaned virgin.
I never cared what my gravestone would say until I landed in deep with a powerful gangster. Lucky for me, my best friend happens to be ruthless too. I should feel guilty that he’s forced to turn on the man who’s been a father to him. Except I’ve always known that Wren’s soul wasn’t as black as he claimed.
He was good.
He was beautiful.
He was mine.
He just didn’t know it yet.
And with Wren keeping me safe, I’ve got time left to rewrite the end of my story. But if he has his way, virgin is already carved in stone.

THE MOTH
I’ve never known anyone as alluring as Lou. Or as frustrating. Since the night she saved my life and stole my wallet for her troubles, I couldn’t stay away.
She became my onus.
My light.
My…anyway.
With nowhere to run, I’m forced to trust someone I never expected. At least with Lou safe in Blackwood Keep—far away from me—I’ll die with my conscience intact. Because she no longer looks at me with friendship in her eyes. Those iridescent blues shine with a different need entirely, and I’ve never been able to deny her.

It is strongly advised that you read The Peer and the Puppet before diving into The Moth and the Flame. Content suitable for ages 18+.

REVIEWED BY JILL

3.5 stars for - The Moth and the Flame - book two in the When Rivals Play series by B.B. Reid. While this book can be read as a stand-alone I highly suggest reading book one - The Peer and The Puppet - first in order to avoid a few tiny spoilers with other characters in the series. This series has many moving parts and is not for the faint of heart so consider yourself warned to not only pay attention but hang on to your seat - because you are in for one heck of a ride!
Louchana “Lou” Valentine had to grow up in foster care when her parents abandoned her. She jumped from house to house until she finally found a family she could tolerate yet she still ran away at regular intervals. Finishing high school wasn’t too high on her priority list the last time she ran away instead deciding eating and not freezing to death were more important until she met someone who would change her life.
Wren Harlan has not had an easy life but he chose to make the best of a bad situation. Befriending Lou was one of the easiest and hardest things he has ever had to do but she has become his entire world. When your best friend is the only woman you could ever fall in love with it leads to a lot of uncomfortable situations but she’s worth them all.
This was a very angst filled friends to lovers romance that slowly chipped away at my sanity for about 75% of the book. There was so much back and forth between these two I wanted to lock them in a room a few times just so they could figure it all out. Once they did finally get together though it was quite hot. With Jamie up next I can’t wait to see where the series goes next!

Excerpt:

Lou didn’t awaken when I climbed through her window, weary and angry, late the following night. My prediction had come true. I’d gone back to Blackwood Keep, and against my better judgment, I confronted Danny Boy. Or rather Ever McNamara. Heir to a multibillion-dollar hotel empire. And the only son of Thomas McNamara. Surprisingly, what bothered me most wasn’t Danny Boy or his double life. Something about his father had seemed familiar to me. As if I’d known him in another lifetime. I shook my head as I toed off the black and white striped Adidas Lou had picked out, swearing the sneakers almost made me look normal. I snorted, and with a moan, she shifted in her sleep causing the sheet covering her lower half to slip dangerously low. Before I could rethink it, I ran my fingers over the curve of her naked hip now bare to me. Thoughts of Ever McNamara fled to the recesses of my mind as I marveled at the smoothness of her skin. It was a surprising contrast to her hardened demeanor, but I always knew it was a front. She was a pillar, no doubt standing tall and appearing strong, but one day, her cracked foundation would crumble, and I’d make damn sure I was around to pick up the pieces. Even if she didn’t want me to be. There were times when she didn’t appreciate just how seriously I took my role as her best friend. She claimed I acted like her father rather than her friend. If that was what she called making sure no one ever hurt her again, then sure—I’d daddy the fuck out of her. Another moan slipped from her lips when my fingers reach the edge of her frilly blue panties, but this time, it was the sound of my name on her lips. For a second, I panicked, thinking she’d caught me perving on her, but when her even breaths continued, I realized she was still very much out of it, and a smile slowly formed as my fingers dipped lower. “What are you dreaming right now, Lou?” Her breath seemed to catch as I continued to toy with the seam of her panties. “Are you dreaming of me?” She sighed in response. “You are, aren’t you?” A low whine escaped her. “I know what you’re after, little Valentine. I’ve known all along.” We both seemed to stop breathing when my fingers dipped beneath her panties and I felt her smooth skin. “How can you be sure you can handle me when I haven’t even kissed you yet?” I swallowed, cursing myself but then decided to allow myself honesty. At least this once. She was writhing now, attempting to relieve the ache I knew was building, but we both knew it was useless. Nothing short of getting me inside her would ever do. “You want to come.” It wasn’t a question but a statement of fact. “But you don’t get to come. You’ve been bad, Lou. This is how I’ll punish you.” I freed my fingers from her panties and stepped back. As if I’d snapped my fingers, breaking her from my spell, she jackknifed from the bed, breathing hard and looking around in confusion. When her gaze pierced the dark and found me, I remain perfectly still, my hands already in my pockets, pretending my fingers weren’t burning with the memory of her soft skin. “Wren?” My eyebrow rose. “You expecting someone else?”

Title: Boss
Author: WS Greer
Genre: Mafia Romance Suspense
Release Date: May 7, 2019
Cover Designer: Robin Harper
Cover Model: Elton Pinto Mota
Photographer: Alex Wightman Photography
I was never supposed to be anything special. Born and raised in Brownsville, Brooklyn, I was supposed to know my place, and grow up to be absolutely nothing. But what they never knew was that I’ve always been special, just not in the way the world defines the word.
I’m special because I’m more ambitious than them. I’m smarter, and much more violent. When you add it all up, you get a man who’s capable of creating something out of nothing… a brand new mafia family right in the heart of New York. They have no idea what I’m willing to do, or how far I’m willing to go to make my family unstoppable.
I don’t care which Italian mob family thinks they run this city. Their rules don’t apply to me. Tell me I can’t take over this borough, I’ll take it. Tell me I can’t overpower the mafia, I’ll crush them. Tell me I can’t touch a mob boss’s daughter, and I’m gonna touch her up-and-down with my hands and tongue, until she screams she belongs to me loud enough for her to father hear, and then the two of us are going to bring the entire structure of things crashing down around our enemies. She’ll be my Bonnie, and I’ll be the baddest Clyde the world has ever seen.
They say we’re angry for how we’ve been treated. Well, she and I are smart enough to know that if you get angry enough, and you harness your emotions just right, you get two things: passionate love, and a wildfire hot enough to burn down everything that ever held you back. This time, two wrongs will make it right.

“Amari and Gianna’s story is an intense and intriguing roller coaster journey from beginning to end.” ~ Wendy’s Book Blog

AMIE'S 4 STAR REVIEW
This was a great story. I have enjoyed everything I have read by this author so far !!
My favorite thing about these characters was that they didn't have to change for each other or lose any of their personality. They were able to come together as one and conquer the world.
The story was full of suspense and danger. I was on the edge of my seat waiting for the floor to drop a number of times. It had all the feels and nothing was over or under done. Amari was the complete bad a$$ with a heart of gold , loyal to a fault. I loved the intensity he had for his family well being and how that immediately carried over to Gianna as soon as they made their pact. Gianna was just as strong and intense yet she was trying to break from her family so her efforts went a different way. They really did compliment each other in all ways. Their chemistry was off the charts and provided much excitement in between the intense scenes.
I know it says it is a standalone BUT I wonder if Amari's siblings will get stories ??

For almost twenty years, Levi has been consumed by the law. He eats, sleeps, and breathes work. Not just because he’s a workaholic, but because he loves it. Sure, he doesn’t have time for a woman and barely sees the rest of his family, but it’s a trade he’s always been happy to make.

4 stars

Dance with Me was a fantastic read. Starla and Levi were great characters. I enjoyed their romance and seeing the progression of their relationship. Levi was a go-getter when it came to Starla. He knew what he wanted and went after it. And when it came to her nothing or no one would stop him for loving and protecting her. And I just loved that, Levi=swoonworthy. They were such an adorable couple together, steamy and sweet. I loved catching up with Levi’s brothers and their wives. Truly enjoyed seeing their relationships and the dynamic between the three couples. And I loved loved catching up with the Montgomery clan. Those women are a hoot! Dance with Me had it all-love, family, steam, suspense, and fun. It’s a great easy entertaining read.

Excerpt:

“Hello, Starla.” “Well, shit.” My eyes soak her in from head to toe. How did she get more beautiful than before? Her auburn hair is pulled up in a knot on top of her head, and she’s in a cropped T-shirt with a pair of skin-tight shorts. My dick is immediately at full attention. “Wh-what are you doing here?” “I was over at Wyatt’s house.” I point across the street. “And he said you were staying here.” She leans on the doorframe, crosses her arms over her chest, and bites her full bottom lip. She’s sex personified, standing right in front of me. “Am I under arrest?” “No.” I reach out to brush a loose strand of hair behind her ear, and the slight contact of skin against skin sends a shock wave through my already energized body. “No, you basically fell in my lap, and I decided to take advantage of it.” “If you think I’m going to lead you straight up to bed, you have another thing coming.” I narrow my eyes. “You just insulted both of us.” She sighs and shakes her head, pinches the bridge of her nose between her eyes, and then laughs. “I apologize. You surprised me. Come on in.” She stands back, and I follow her in, looking around the open living space. “Do you want something to drink?” “No, thanks.” “I need a water. Follow me.” She walks ahead of me to the kitchen, and my eyes are pinned to her round ass. I remember how the globes of those cheeks feel in my hands as she rides me. I remember everything. “Sure you don’t want some?” I try to swallow around my dry tongue and just nod. “Turns out, I do.” She passes me a bottle and then takes a sip of her own. “So, is the tour over?” I ask. “Yes, and I’m on vacation.” She frowns slightly, staring down at her water. “Forced vacation.” “Why?” She blinks up at me. “Because I was exhausted, and the doctor insisted.” I narrow my eyes again, pissed that she worked herself into exhaustion. “Starla—” “I’m fine,” she insists. “And I’m already feeling better. Also, I owe you an apology.” That stops me short. “No, you don’t.” “Oh, I do.” She takes another sip, then sets the bottle aside and leans on the island. I get a great view of her cleavage. She’s too sexy for her own damn good. “I’m sorry I didn’t reply to your messages, Levi.” “Why didn’t you?” She blows out a breath. “Because I was a little overwhelmed. The sex was—” “Damn incredible.” “Yeah. It was. Intense is also a good word for it, and I get the feeling that you’re an intense man.” I nod once. “If I hurt you or scared you—” “No, it’s not that at all,” she hurries to assure me. “I didn’t do anything that I didn’t want or enjoy. I’m sorry if I gave you that impression. I hadn’t been with a man in a long time, and we have some powerful chemistry.” That’s the understatement of the year. I can feel the electricity flowing between us like a rushing river. “That’s really all I’m comfortable saying right now,” she admits and swallows. “That’s enough.” For now.

Pretty Reckless by L.J. Shen ~ BLOG TOUR PROMO ~

PR - BT banner.jpg

Pretty Reckless, an all-new standalone high school, bully romance from USA Today bestselling author L.J. Shen, is available now!

LJSPrettyRecklessBookCover6x9_MEDIUM

We were supposed to be best friends
But turned out to be worst enemies…
Penn
They say revenge is a dish best served cold.
I’d had four years to stew on what Daria Followhill did to me, and now my heart is completely iced.
I took her first kiss.
She took the only thing I loved.
I was poor.
She was rich.
The good thing about circumstances? They can change. Fast.
Now, I’m her parents’ latest shiny project.
Her housemate. Her tormentor. The captain of the rival football team she hates so much.
Yeah, baby girl, say it—I’m your foster brother.
There’s a price to pay for ruining the only good thing in my life, and she’s about to shell out some serious tears.
Daria Followhill thinks she is THE queen. I’m about to prove to her that she’s nothing but a spoiled princess.
Daria
Everyone loves a good-old, unapologetic punk.
But being a bitch? Oh, you get slammed for every snarky comment, cynical eye roll, and foot you put in your adversaries’ way.
The thing about stiletto heels is that they make a hell of a dent when you walk all over the people who try to hurt you.
In Penn Scully’s case, I pierced his heart until he bled out, then left it in a trash can on a bright summer day.
Four years ago, he asked me to save all of my firsts for him.
Now he lives across the hall, and there’s nothing I want more than to be his last everything.
His parting words when he gave me his heart were that nothing in this world is free.
Now? Now he is making me pay.

Excerpt:

“I don’t want you transferring into my school,” I hiss out. Melody would gladly file a transfer request, and Principal Prichard would salivate over the chance to snatch him up for our football team.
“That won’t be a problem. You guys suck so much ass, you have shit-breath.”
“Still smells better than poverty. You’re poor, right? Your sister was just bullshitting about being rich.”
When someone hits me with a stick, I run over them with a tank. I’m so mean to him I want to throw up. I hate this part of being me. The striking harder at all costs part.
“Just to make things clear.” I put the brush down, batting my lashes. “You’re not my step-sibling, foster brother, or a part of the family. You’re a stray dog. Last of the litter, most unlikely to be adopted, and a charity case.”
Penn takes a step toward me, and my heart is fighting its way out of my ribcage. The closer he gets, the more I realize that my heart might succeed. Penn’s eyes remind me of a snake’s. Mesmerizing, but inhuman altogether. They weren’t like that before.
His scent messes with my head. I want to reach out and caress his face. Kiss his wounds better. Beg for forgiveness. Curse him. Push him away. Cry on his shoulder for what we’ve done. For how it ended. For what we became afterwards, because I’m full of crap and he is totally empty.
We ruined ourselves the day of our first kiss.
Penn looks down at me. Time stops. It feels like the world is losing gravity, falling into a bottomless depth in space when he clasps my chin with his thumb and finger, lifting my head up. I can’t breathe. I’m not sure I want to, either. My towel drops to the floor with a thud, even though I secured it over my chest. I realize that he tugged at it intentionally. I’m naked. My body, my soul, my heart. All my walls are down. Somewhere in my head, a red alarm blasts and my inhibitions are getting armed, ready to fight back. I’m trying to decode his expression. He is amused, irritated, and…playful? The mixture of emotions doesn’t make any sense.
“Mess with me, Followhill, and I will ruin you.”
“Not if I ruin you first.”

Imperfect Match, a sexy friends to lovers standalone romance, from New York Times bestselling Corinne Michaels & USA Today bestselling Melanie Harlow, is available now!

  ImperfectMatch_FrontCover_LoRes copy.jpg

Rule number one for a professional matchmaker?
Don’t fall in love with your client.
I screwed that up when I fell for my best friend, Reid Fortino. He’s gorgeous, successful, and sexy as hell. I figured it would be easy to find him a match—and save the family business at the same time.
But the more time I spend attempting to find the perfect girl, the more I realize how much I want him for my own. What’s the harm if we give in for just one night?
I should have known that would never be enough.
Now I’m on the verge of losing my job and my heart.
We were an imperfect match from the start, but I don’t know how to let him go.

REVIEWED BY WENDY

3.5 stars

An added twist to the typical friends-to-lovers trope and I quite enjoyed it. Reid and Willow are fine characters. They had great chemistry and not just the steamy kind. Their friendship was so fundamental to anything more. I liked their banter and their interactions. They just had great fun together. Reid and Willow were just endearing especially as their relationship progressed. It is definitely shown how much they fit together. I liked reading how it would all play out. I also enjoyed Willow’s sister Aspen and Reid’s brother Leo and their relationships with their siblings. This story was cute, quirky, and fun. An Imperfect Match was a perfect read.

Excerpt:

What would it be like to have her that way? Skin to skin? Breathless and begging? My body inside hers? I want answers, I think as I open the door to our building. No, I need them. I take the elevator up to our floor and go right to her apartment. Using the key she gave me, I unlock her door, smiling that she still hasn’t changed the lock, and head inside. “Reid?” She jumps off the couch and I freeze. Jesus, she’s fucking beautiful. I’ve seen her a million times like this, but I don’t know what it is—I can’t breathe. Her hair is piled up on top of her head in some sort of nest, the glasses that she swears she doesn’t need are on, and her legs ... God, her legs. Long, sweet, slender … they would look perfect around my neck. “What are you doing here? If this is about …” She stops talking and looks at me, her eyes full of confusion as I watch her chest rise and fall. I walk toward her, unable to stand still. My hands grip her cheeks, and I pull her mouth to mine. Her gasp is swallowed by the searing kiss. Her fingers wrap around my wrists and I don’t know if she’s trying to stop me, but I’m going to keep going until she does. Yet she never does. Instead of pushing me away, her hands move to my hips. Willow kisses me back. She kisses me like this is the only option. She kisses me harder and more passionately than the last time. She gives as much as she takes and I fucking revel in it. This is crazy, but I don’t care. It’s right. It’s everything that finally makes sense. I wondered what it would be like and now I know—it’s fucking perfect. “Reid.” She says my name and then pulls my mouth back to hers. I kiss her, loving how our mouths fit and the way her tongue feels against mine. “Tell me to stop.” I give her an out that I pray she won’t take. “What?” “Tell me now, Wills.” I’m desperate for her. Seeing her tonight, knowing she was spying on me, did something to my heart that I can’t explain. It was the answer to the question that neither of us was willing to face. There’s something here. Maybe it’s new. Maybe it’s always been there but we didn’t see it. Maybe Willow and I needed to be pushed. Whatever the reason, the outcome is this. She touches my face. Her fingertips are soft, and she moves her thumb to my lip. “I can’t. I don’t know what’s happening, but I don’t want it to stop.” “Good, because I don’t think I could.” My mouth is back to hers the second the words are out. She giggles against my lips and I drink it in. Everything about Willow is sweet. Her mouth, her laughter, her heart. They all make her irresistible. I don’t know how I never saw it. I break the kiss and scoop her into my arms, bringing her back to the bedroom. She doesn’t say anything, and I’m glad for it. We’re both always in our heads and I’m very much ready to be in her instead. I lay her down and crawl over her, loving how she looks at me with lust-filled eyes. “Tell me what you want, Wills.” She shakes her head and I know what she’s doing, but I’m not having it. “Don’t think, baby, just tell me.” Her lids fall, closing me off to what she doesn’t want me to see, and I take a beat to really look at her. Lips swollen, shirt falling off her shoulder, hair fanning out on the bed. She looks like an angel. “I want you to kiss me,” she whispers.

Wicked Force by Sawyer Bennett
3 stars
Wicked Force was an alright read. I didn’t like it nor did I hate it, just somewhere in the middle. This story didn’t wow me the way the blurb did. It had potential but I just wasn’t feeling it too much. Kynan becomes Josyln’s bodyguard because her mother deems it necessary. When these two first meet, there is attraction at first glance. But the more time they spend together there is a deeper connection developing. It was interesting to see how it would all play out. The characters, the storyline, and everything were just satisfactory. While there is a somewhat completed ending, it seems that their story continues in a new series by Sawyer Bennett. I might invest in the continuation of their story because I would like to know.

Sawyer likes her Bloody Marys strong, her martinis dirty, and her heroes a combination of the two. When not bringing fictional romance to life, Sawyer is a chauffeur, stylist, chef, maid, and personal assistant to a very active daughter, as well as full-time servant to her adorably naughty dogs. She believes in the good of others, and that a bad day can be cured with a great work-out, cake, or even better, both.
Sawyer also writes general and women’s fiction under the pen name S. Bennett and sweet romance under the name Juliette Poe.

Nothing Without You by Monica Murphy
3.5 stars
I love a good second-chance romance. Maisie and Tucker were high school sweethearts that reconnect many years later. Reading about how this couple will navigate feelings, history, old hurts, and so much more was interesting. They had great interactions and you can definitely see how right they were together. I enjoyed seeing it all play out. Tucker and Maisie were fine characters and I liked seeing the connections from the two worlds merging. Nothing without You was a sweet and easy read that I enjoyed and liked.
