When a wannabe rockstar with medical training comes face to face with an unconscious woman at a band audition, neither one realized the impact they would have on each other.

In Alterity, the first book in a new series by Ashlynne Laynne, the storyline follows Austin MacKenzie, a talented musician from the upper echelon of society. His life is pretty well mapped out, with the perfect society girlfriend waiting in the wings for him to get the music out of his system.

Liz Carlisle is trying to make ends meet. The opportunity to launch a music career is appealing, but that chance gets put on hold. When she meets Austin, a new world of possibilities emerges.

One of the unusual aspects of the storyline is the fact that Austin follows a strict family code meaning that sex prior to marriage is forbidden. I was impressed with this concept, but then came across a scene that provided a bit of a loophole to that code. While I appreciate the concept, I would have been more impressed if Austin had exerted more resistance to other physical interactions.

While some of the storyline seems to follow the rich guy/poor girl scenario, there are some unexpected twists along the way. Ultimately it appears to be a story about finding yourself. Austin and Liz build a solid friendship, but with his mother exerting pressure to marry Jennifer, it looks like that is all they will have.

As a rocker romance, this was definitely very tame compared to others within the genre. The author shows the dark side through Jake, the band's drummer.

The storyline moved along pretty well, but it didn't have quite the amount of expected angst. In the end, the foundation is laid for additional books in the series, most likely featuring other members of the band.
