I couldn’t sleep. I meant to go to the kitchen and then I ended up here because I wanted . . .” His reaction cuts like his anger. “Just never mind.” I try to move around him but his hands press to the wall beside me, caging me, and now I’m angry. “Are we doing this again? Don’t bully me. My stupid flashbacks are doing a fine job of that on their own. I said I’m sorry. Just let me go back to my room.”
“You wanted what?”
“I wanted you to do what you swore you could,” I blurt, having nothing to lose when everything is already gone.
“Only I don’t want you to fuck me until I can’t remember my name. I want you to fuck me until I stop thinking about that man and the gun. Because you were right. Memories are the enemies that never die. But I know you don’t want—”
His hand slides under my hair and he drags me to him, my hand flattening on the hard wall of his chest. “I do want. So fucking bad it’s killing me.”
My palm is directly over his heart, and I can feel it racing, the air around us crackling with barely contained passion. “I don’t need a hero to save my virtue tonight. I need you. So please. Fuck me and then fuck with my head so no one else can. Let me choose my own sins.”
He is stone, unmoving, his body steel, his expression unreadable, the sexual tension crackling between us. “You want sin, sweetheart,” he says. “I’ll give you sin.” His mouth closes down on mine, his tongue licking into my mouth, wicked with demand, and I can taste his hunger, his need. A deep, aching need I want to fill.
Review
Denial is book one in the Careless Whispers series, which is a spinoff of the Inside Out series. With that being said, I have not read the Inside Out series, and still felt comfortable reading Denial. This book is packed with suspense, sexy interactions, and a lot of questions that kept me reading. Honestly, this was one where I kept getting annoyed at my real life for pulling me away from the story when I needed to know what was going to happen next. As you can guess, I am now anxiously awaiting the next book in this series and gave Denial 5 stars.
When Ella wakes up in the hospital she has no memory of who she is or how she ended up there. Her only ally seems to be the attractive man who found her. Throughout the book, Ella’s memory begins to come back in bits and pieces, revealing that she’s been through some pretty bad times. Each revelation leaves even more questions in many ways. I loved the chemistry between Ella and Kayden. I also really liked how Ella tried to be strong even when she had no idea who she was or who she could trust.
Kayden remained a mystery throughout the book, and I truly had a love/hate relationship with him. There is no denying that he’s sexy and has a definite panty-melting alpha male quality, but I felt uneasy about him many times. Denial ends with a cliffhanger, leaving me with even more questions about his involvement with Ella. I suppose I will have to impatiently await the next book to find out the truth about Kayden.
