Blurb

I’ve always thought of myself as a pretty happy-go-lucky kind of person. I wanted to save the world, or at least leave my stamp behind. In my own naïve way I thought I could bribe karma but life has a way of teaching us lessons.

I never knew how selfish I was until my life was ripped away from me.

Taken.

I’m forced to watch as they torture and kill my family … and I know I’m next.

I hear their screams.

I watch them die.

It’s the worst kind of torture

Then he comes. He made a promise to my brother. It’s the only thing keeping him bound to me.

A promise to protect me.

I should set him free of the promise … but I don’t. He’s my shield against karma. He’s my protector.

Excerpt

Have you ever seen a bomb detonate? Just after the explosion, there’s this hissing silence and then chaos follows - rubble, destruction and so much pain and sorrow.

Right now, it’s as if that scenario is being played in reverse.

It’s a terrifying chaos as that man goes to stand in front of Dad. Dad’s still unconscious. He can’t even do anything to defend himself.

Life seems to be returning to my body in flashes. First, I start to yank at the chain. Then my mouth opens in a horrifying, silent scream.

The man grabs a fistful of Dad’s hair, shoves his head back, and then I watch as he presses the blade to Dad’s neck.

A violent pain blossoms in my chest and it threatens to bring the walls down around me. I watch as blood starts to trickle down Dad’s neck and then the man shoves the blade deeper.

I start to scream as hysteria hits me in waves. Part of me is caught in a nightmare-like state, refusing to believe that this is actually happening right now.

The man just walks away after slicing Dad’s neck open. My eyes are glued to my father’s blood flowing from the wound. The hysteria rages inside of me until I’m swept away in a maddening mania.

I can’t think clearly anymore.

I can’t process what I’m seeing.

All I can do is weep, scream, and yank at the unforgiving chain around my neck.

This - whatever this sick and twisted situation is - cannot be happening.

This is not real … this is not real … this is not real.

REVIEWED BY SHERI

This Arc was provided in return for a honest review.

After spending a few years traveling the world, Riley is now ready to come back home. Back to the place where she is bright spot in everyone's life. Her parents just adore her and both of her brothers place her on the  highest pedestal but when her homecoming is turned upside down Riley is in for a surprise. Following the tragic deaths of her family (which she was witness to), Riley finds herself alone. But when she does come to, Riley discovers that there is a group of people who is there to help her get through this tragedy.

Griffin has always been on the hunt for the bad guy. But when his best friend is killed by their enemy what else can a man do? Not only was Jacob's death Griffin's fault but so was his entire families. However when Griffin discovers that Jacob's precocious Riley is alive and well, he makes it his mission to keep her safe. He owes it to Jacob. But at what cost?

Both Riley and Griffin start out as relative strangers but after being around each other so much both realize they are perfect for each other. With old enemies on the hunt and more tragedy on the way, can these two make it through life unscathed? Or will each become the deaths to one another?

This is the first time I was able to read and review something from Michelle Horst and can I just say that I found my new favorite author. Her story line was fantastic and her characters were extremely well rounded. I loved Amelia, she was just the person Riley needed in order to make it through her heartache. However I almost shed a tear when she met her maker....damn you Michelle...... The quotes from some of the characters were great. They fit in perfectly with the story line and some even made me swoon.

"I'll never be sorry for saving you. SO you can break, Riley. You can shatter to pieces. I'll pick up every single pieces and put you back together, but never ask me to let you go."

"Without you I have no direction in life. SO let me do this for you. Let me help you make it easier for you. Let me be a part of your life"

Total 4 star review. This book can also be read as a stand alone.
