EXCERPT

“You can’t jump.”
She narrows her eyes on me. “Of course I can.”
“Is it safe?”
My grip on her grows tighter and she steps close enough that I can feel the heat of her breasts brush against my ribs. “Lucas, do you trust me?”
“No.” The word comes out on a shaky whisper.
A gentle grin softens her face and with both her hands she works to relax my hold enough for her to slip free. Seconds later she turns, takes four long strides, and disappears off the rock cliff.
A holler that can only be described as guttural exhilaration echoes off the canyon walls and slices through the trees.
I race to the edge and there’s nothing but a circle of white bubbles marring the once shimmering pond.
I wait for her to surface, and just when I’m about to jump in and rescue her, her head pops up out of the water with a feral howl.
“That was amazing!” She waves at me. “The water is perfect!”
With adrenaline coursing through my veins, I allow myself a moment to wonder what it would be like to be as free as Shyann. Everything I do is weighed against the danger of doing it. The threat of blacking out always pulling me back to walk the safer, less risky side of any situation. But something about her makes me want to try harder, makes me want to take a risk like other twenty-five-year-old guys. The sound of her squealing lights a fire in my chest that has me wanting to jump.
Risking a blackout might be worth the few seconds of euphoria I haven’t felt since…I can’t remember.
I think of backing away and yelling for her to meet me at the truck, but something pulls me toward her. Part of me wonders if it’s nothing more than wanting to be close, to keep her safe, because she belongs to Mr. Jennings and I owe him. But even as the thought enters my mind, so does another.
I want her to like me.
I want her to see me as brave.
I want to know what it’s like to be normal.

REVIEWED BY JILL

Split is my very first J.B. Salsbury book and I can safely say it will NOT be my last! This story is about a hero that suffers from multiple personality disorder and can't control when the "other" half decides to take over. I went into this a bit skeptical as it was a love story with a serious mental health issue, but I couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised with how the author went about explaining and describing the issues the couple faced.
Shyann Jennings got out of the small town of Payson as soon as she could for college, but now years later she is forced to come back when her dream job doesn't pan out. Shyann absolutely hates that she had to come back home and isn't looking forward to the inevitable "I told you so" from her father. Without money and rather bleak employment prospects Shyann has to go back to work for her father too or she would be broke for the foreseeable future. Shyann quickly realizes while some things have changed almost everything else has remain unchanged in the years she has been gone.
Lucas Menzano has a very tragic past, but he doesn't remember what exactly happened the night that changed the course of his life. Lucas had suffered from "episodes" of blacking-out since he was a child and has no recollection of what happens while he becomes someone else. After moving from place to place with no real idea of exactly where he was headed Lucas stumbles across Nash Jennings and impresses the man who in turn gives him a job. After months of keeping to himself in Payson a gorgeous raven haired woman catches his attention when he drops a friend off at home after work. Lucas learns the beauty is the one woman he should never think twice about since she just so happens to be the boss's daughter. This story caught my attention from the first chapter and kept me on the edge all the way through until the end. While there is one element I am sure some people will find issue with I feel the author dealt with the situation in a very believable and thought provoking way. All things considered the chemistry among the characters was off the charts and so hot. Can't wait to read the other books on my kindle from this very talented author.
