EXCERPT

Once the bar was cleared out and locked up for the night and the rest of the staff sent home, Ryan started in on me. The little shit had been waiting hours to have this discussion.

“Can we please have a serious conversation?” He washed a glass as he spoke, but his eyes met mine, and they looked almost sad.

When Nick stopped what he was doing and inched closer to where Ryan and I stood, I played dumb.

“What are we getting serious about?”

“You know what,” Nick said, but Ryan waved him off.

“Let me handle this,” he whispered to Nick.

“Um, I can hear you, you know?”

“Of course I know,” Ryan snapped. “Now, listen. There’s something I can’t figure out, okay? And I don’t want you getting all pissed off and closing up on us when I ask you.”

I groaned, wishing that Ryan would cut to the chase already and stop beating around the bush like a fucking girl. “Spit it out. I can handle whatever it is you’re too chickenshit to ask.”

He dropped the glass into the soapy water and it splashed all over his shirt. Thank God he’d put it back on after last call. “What’s the deal with you and Shelby?”

That was it? That was his big dramatic question?

“What kind of question is that? How am I supposed to answer that?”

Nick said slowly, “I think what Ryan’s trying to say is, we can see that you’re not happy. We don’t understand why you stay.”

I wasn’t sure how to answer that question, or if I wanted to. I’d kept everything to myself for so long, not wanting to burden anyone with my mess, but maybe it was time to unload. I wasn’t good at asking for help, but maybe that’s what these two were here for. God knew I’d do anything for either of them, and I knew they’d do the same for me. I just hated the very idea of needing anyone.

AMIE'S 4 STAR REVIEW

I feel like it has been awhile since I read a book by this author and I truly missed her !! I didn't read book 1 in this series of standalones but it didn't make a difference although I need to read it now !! These 3 brothers and their bar are a dream come true for the single ladies in the area. They are hot , charming and really just down to earth typical guys.

This is Frank's story and although he is the oldest he has yet to settle down despite being in a 10 year loveless relationship. I say that but I don't know that it is the correct way to explain his current situation. When he was injured and not able to follow his dreams anymore his girl stood by him and was there through all the good , bad and ugly. He cared for her but even back then he was unsure of how deep his feelings ran. After all she had done for him he couldn't just say goodbye. He genuinely cared for her and she was like part of the family for years. Now as he lives day by day going through the motions he has accepted that since he can't man up and be honest he will never be truly happy as one of his brothers is now. One night Claudia walks into the bar - or is dragged into the bar, and his whole thought process changes. He is captivated by her immediately and both his brothers notice it. It comes to light just how unhappy Frank has been all these years when he is now faced with a woman that interests him in so many ways. It is sad in a way - I mean I feel for Frank's girlfriend but in all honesty she has been living this relationship aware of the disconnect so why not do something about it. Having said that I am not a fan of cheating but also not a huge basher of emotional cheating as some call it. Especially when you are in their head seeing how tormented they are. It is always easy in any situation , real life or book life , to claim you would do things differently BUT you never know until you are there. As for Claudia she has some relationship hang ups due to her past and her daddy issues. Her roommate loves the bar because she loves the very unattainable Fisher brother we have yet to get the story on !! So dragging Claudia here really wasn't about Claudia yet it ends up being the gateway to her and Frank both facing their pasts and putting an end to their unhappiness and being able to love and trust again. Maybe her roommate and the unattainable one will have a thing ?? It isn't easy and Frank makes some crap choices and Claudia does as well but in the end how can you deny them their HEA !!

About the Author

I got fired from my last job.  It's true.  I know you're sitting there thinking, "Jenn, how could anyone in their right mind fire someone like you?" And I'd love to give you a good reason, but the truth is that sometimes being all sorts of awesome isn't fun for other people. They don't always tend to like it. lol  So I picked my pride off the floor, bought a laptop and started writing my first book. And you know what I realized? Writing stories that meant something to me was a million times better than working my ass off for someone who didn't really care about anything other than the bottom line.  My soul has never felt more satisfied.  My heart has never been more full. I've never worked so hard in my life, but I love every second of it. I truly do. It is SO worth it.  All of it.  Every moment. The journey it took to get to this point- I wouldn't change a thing.

Darkest Temptation by Rachel Van Dyken

Genre: Paranormal Romance

Publishing Date: October 31st, 2017

I'm a werewolf King who chose to step down out of grief for my mate.
For centuries I've been alone, choosing to live a life of modesty despite the wealth surrounding me.
I deserve to be punished.
I crave things I have no business craving.
And it is manifesting itself in a way I'm terrified I won't be able to control any longer.
Especially since she arrived.
Vampire. Orphan. Beaten beyond recognition.
My blood calls to her in a way that makes no sense.
I'm a wolf.
She's a vampire.
The two don't mate.
They barely tolerate one another.
All it takes is one slip of control on my part — one taste.
And I doom us all.
Then again, I never knew what is lurking inside has the power to balance good and evil.

Excerpt:

The air around me thickened with a sweet-smelling fog. I inhaled and closed my eyes, allowing my baser instincts to take over. “Wolf.” She whispered my name. I sniffed. The voice was not familiar. It was not my mate. It was… other. “Wolf,” she beckoned again. Branches crunched beneath my feet as I made my way closer to the sweet scent, closer to the warmth, closer to what I should have been running from. I was already mated. And yet — I was being pulled. Like a siren’s song. I hated sirens. Every last one of them. But only the strongest were male. This — I sniffed the air again as ecstasy took over — this was no male. This was all female. The instinct to protect kicked in, forcing a surge of adrenaline through my limbs as I staggered toward the trees. Green eyes blinked through the fog. I stilled. My breath caught. Vampire. I frowned, reaching for her. “Kiss me, Wolf.” Why was I tempted? Why did I want to touch this being? When every hair stood on end like she was foe not friend. When I had a mate back home that I loved more than life itself. Confusion warred with disgust, and then the vampire stood on her tiptoes and pressed her cheek against mine, the way my people greeted. But she was no wolf. Her lips grazed the outside of my ear before she bit down onto my neck… I jerked awake. Sweat pooled the bed like I’d just taken a shower. And my mate, the one I was so convinced would be lying right next to me, was gone. She’d been gone. Over a hundred years. And every year, like clockwork, on the anniversary of her death. I saw my vampire. She bit me. And I woke up with a bruise on my neck as if it were real.

Third Base by Stella ~ RELEASE BLITZ ~

Title: Third Base
Author: Stella
Genre: Sports Romance/Friends-to-lovers
Release Date: November 2, 2017

Blurb

First base: kissing.
Second base: above the waist.
Third base: below the waist.
Home run: no explanation needed.

Every baseball player knows to keep their eye on the ball and swing for the fences. Each base counts, but a home run is the goal. No one wants to strike out. This is true both on and off the field.

Ellie Teller had been my best friend since we were born, and we had a plan—get out of the tiny Alabama town we’d grown up in and go to college…together. But even life’s best-laid plans could throw a powerful curveball. Rather than attend classes, I was now the starting pitcher for a Major League team.

While my game-day stats were impressive, my record with women was less desirable. I was the professional baseball player who hadn’t been able to make it past third base since the one and only night I’d played hardball with my best friend.

But when the bottom of the ninth came to a close on my career, I had to decide if our friendship was worth more than a few extra innings.

Claire has committed the ultimate sin in the medical world. She’s fallen for the one man she’s forbidden to love.
Her patient, Jesse Winslow.
And she’s not about to lose him to Kylie Martin... Again.

Excerpt:

I’m at a table in the back-right corner, he texted. In a cab a few blocks away. See you in 5. Kylie was running a few minutes late, not rudely late, just fashionably late. She had pulled nearly everything she owned out of her closet, trying to find something that was flattering, yet rock-star cool and ‘Yeah, I know his ex is a top model’. ‘So What’ chic was the look she was trying to pull off. It wasn’t easy. With the recent weight loss, she was between sizes. Her big girl clothes, as she was now referring to them, looked like misshapen potato sacks on her and her pageant days’ wardrobe were nowhere near an option yet, and might not ever be. She made the decision. It’s New York, seriously, just pick something black. And so black it was. Black legging jeans, black high boots, a thin, black, cashmere V-neck sweater, all topped with a black leather jacket. Twisting her hair, she clipped it up, then pulled a few strands out to frame her face and a few at the base of her neckline. It was messy and sexy. Standing in front of the mirror, she wondered for whom she was dressing. Jesse? Well, yeah, you don’t want to be seen with a rock star looking like a beast on parade. The paparazzi? Same logic applied as for Jesse. The skinny model ex-girlfriend? Well, not really for her, but for everyone who would make a comparison. For herself? C’mon, he’s Jesse Fucking Winslow. Get real. As she made her way to the back of the darkened restaurant, Kylie could feel her spine straighten, shoulders fall back, chin up. The only thing missing was the sash as she gracefully floated past tables, the male occupants covertly attempting to sneak an appreciative look without alerting their female companions. I’ve still got it. And her confidence soared as she sat down in the chair next to one of the sexiest, most recognizable men on the planet, and he had watched every man in the restaurant check her out. “You look gorgeous, Toots.” “Thank you.” It was still surreal that she was sitting here with her new buddy. “I’m going to have to fight half the guys in the restaurant off you.” Laughing, “I doubt that.” Kylie rolled her eyes.

I must've been 5 or 6 when I started writing "stories". I would write them and hide them. Not wanting anyone to see my "secret" thoughts. I needed to write - even back then. Writer, photographer, insatiable wanderluster, edge-player, foodie, music addict, pop culture fanatic, animal lover, warrior for the rights of people and planet, and avid cusser (am a Native New Yorker, so very little offends me...and if I am offended, it must be pretty freaking bad..like bad grammar!) Read a Sneak Peek:

Wordlessly, Daniel picks me up, carrying me to the bedroom. How did I end up in his arms for the second time today? After breakfast, I was too sick to take it all in, but now... oh my, am I making up for that. Every nerve ending where my bare skin presses against Daniel is perking up. The bits covered by the towel aren’t faring much better. A light shudder passes through me when Daniel lays me on the bed. To my dismay, he sits on the edge, pulling my left ankle in his lap, inspecting it. “Does it hurt?” “No.” I flex it a little, testing it out. “Definitely no sprain, but I’m going to have bruises tomorrow all over my left side. I think you bring me bad luck. I seem to have all sorts of accidents when I’m around you. First I nearly sprained my ankle at Blake and Clara’s wedding, and today—” “You scared ten years off my life today.” Daniel shakes his head, putting my foot back on the mattress. He’s frowning as he shifts his weight until he sits right next to my hips. I don’t like that frown one bit, but then I remember Daniel isn’t mine to make happy. Still, I can lighten up the situation. “Hmm, now that you mention it, I can see two white hairs. Weren’t there before. Must have sprouted while I was asleep.” Reaching out, I’m aiming to touch a random spot on his scalp, but somehow end up running my hand through his hair. Damn it, he’s not mine to touch. Why do I keep forgetting this? My heart thumps wildly when I realize Daniel’s leaning into my hand as if... as if he’s been yearning for my touch as much as I’ve yearned for his. Has he missed me just as much? I barely formulate the thought when he grabs my hand, kissing the inside of my wrist. I feel the contact reverberate through my entire body until my center is on fire. Goose bumps erupt everywhere on my skin, and I have no way to hide them. Daniel’s pupils dilate. I’m not the only one who is aroused. “You look even more beautiful than I remember, Caroline.” I shake my head. “I’ve put on weight.” “You’re perfect. You’re—” Daniel doesn’t finish the sentence. Instead, he leans over, sealing his lips against mine. Oh God, his lips. They’re so warm and feel so, so good against mine that I fist his shirt without thinking, pulling him even closer, scooting over to one side, making space for him.

REVIEWED BY WENDY
4 stars

I love a good second chance romance and this one was great. Daniel and Caroline were a cute couple. There was a friendship that was the origin of these two so reading about them reconnecting in not only love but also friendship was heartwarming. Your One True Love had the right amount of sweet, sexy, romance, and fun. This was a true romance story. I enjoyed the banter, the conversations, and the interactions between Daniel and Caroline. They were just right together and seeing their relationship bloom again was beautiful. Of course, I loved seeing the whole Bennett gang again. They are fantastic and so much fun. Overall this was a great read. A light, sweet, non-angsty love story. I can’t wait for Summer’s story. She feels like a mystery to me and now with her being in the forefront I’m excited to dive in.

Blurb

I fell in love with my best friend but he didn't love me back.
Sounds like a cheesy line from a country song, right? Too bad it's the story of my life.
I thought that I’d moved on, swore he was the one.
But that facade began to fade in the flash of a half-carat diamond ring.
Now years later, here I am, running back to the boy who broke my adolescent heart, hoping that just maybe, he’ll be the one to piece it back together.
....

I fell in love with my best friend while she fell in love with him.
Ironically, it was my own damn fault. I practically served her up on a silver platter.
So I turned to my second love, basketball, moving across the country to escape.
For years, I’ve been sitting on the sidelines watching, waiting.

Now it's time to make my move.
No more fouling out.
This time, I'm going to score.

I wasn't supposed to fall in love with the nanny.
When my wife left, she took the illusion of happiness with her, and I've been caught in a free fall ever since. For nine long months, I've been fighting to figure out how to be a single dad, how to be alone.
For nine long months, I've been failing.
When Hannah walked through the door, I took my first breath since I'd found myself on my own. She slipped into our lives effortlessly, showing me what I've been missing all these years. Because Hannah made me smile when I thought I'd packed the notion of happiness away with my wedding album.
She was only supposed to be the nanny, but she's so much more.
The day my wife left should have been the worst day of my life, but it wasn't. It was when Hannah walked away, taking my heart with her.

Excerpt:

CHARLIE The next morning, I was up and in my office before anyone was awake, attacking my work with newfound enthusiasm and a plan in mind. Because I wanted to feel like I’d felt the night before in the kitchen again, and there was only one way to get that back. Today, I would take a few breaks and be present. Today, I would change, work be damned. Today would mark the first real attempt. Because change wouldn’t happen on its own. I had to make it happen. And to make it happen, I would have to put boundaries in place, starting with my weekends. I checked the clock around eleven that morning and closed my laptop, pushing away from my desk and heading up the stairs in search of my children. When I rounded the corner into the kitchen, I found them sitting at the table with their lunches. And when they saw me, their smiles validated my grand plans with unwavering certainty. “Hey, guys,” I said, smiling back as I walked over to them, ruffling Sammy’s hair when I passed him. “Hi, Daddy,” he said. Maven’s mouth was full, so she just waved, and Hannah smiled at me from the island where she was setting up a spread for sandwiches. I snagged a grape off Maven’s plate and popped it into my mouth. She handed me another, which I accepted. “Thanks, pumpkin.” “Are you done working?” Sammy asked hopefully. “’Fraid not, bud. But I thought I’d come have lunch with you. Is that okay?” “Yeah! Want a Nilla Wafer?” “Psh, obviously. And I thought we could play for a little bit before I have to get back to work. What do you say?” He nodded, grinning. “We can play trucks! You be the bulldozer and I’ll be the tractor and Maven can be the monster truck and Hannah can be the ambulance because she helps people.” “Perfect,” I said on a chuckle. A burst of color caught my eye. A vase on the windowsill behind the table held a spray of red and orange tulips. “Those are beautiful,” I said, gesturing to them. “Where did they come from?” “Oh, I picked them up this morning,” Hannah said with that ever-present smile. “Feeling homesick?” “Always a little. But I love having fresh flowers in the house, something bright and delicate and alive. Well, maybe not alive anymore, but it feels alive, doesn’t it?” “It does,” I said as I moved to her side. “Can I make you a sandwich?” Hannah asked. “Nah, I think I can manage, thanks. How’s it going this morning?” “It’s good. We went to the park this morning.” “I rode my bike!” Sammy crowed. “Did you? No bumps or scrapes?” “Nope!” “I’m impressed. Maybe next time I can come too,” I said, hoping it was something I could deliver as I reached into the bread bag for a stack. Hannah turned to the cupboard, returning with a plate for me. “Thank you.” She was still smiling, standing at my side, assembling her sandwich. It was so mundane, something completely and utterly boring, but like the weirdo that I was, I found myself watching her hands as she folded cold cuts. We worked around each other—not that it was complicated, but there was a sort of rhythm between us, a natural pace wherein I used what she wasn’t and finished just as she needed what I had. I wasn’t sure why I noticed it, but I did, and I appreciated the simple synchronicity of the moment, a breath where things were easy. I passed her the mustard as she handed me the ham. “So, I was thinking …” I paused. “Oh, were you?” She glanced over at me with a hint of mirth at the corners of her lips. “I know. I almost sprained something.” Hannah laughed gently. “If it’s okay, I think I’d like to try to handle bedtime tonight.” “Of course it’s okay; they’re your children.” That time, her laughter was sweet. “Do you … would you … do you think you could maybe …” She shifted to face me, her eyes full of encouragement. “Would you mind … helping me?” Hannah nodded, her smile opening up. “That’s what I’m here for. Just let me know what you’d like me to do.” I smiled back. “I’m sorry. I know it sounds stupid. I just … I haven’t done this much on my own, but I’d like to start.” Her eyes softened, caught by slanting light, lighting up with sunshine. “There’s nothing to be afraid of,” she said simply. I didn’t speak. “There’s no right or wrong, and they don’t care about anything other than you being there. It’s simple enough; you only have to try.” “Is it really that easy?” “It really is. You’ll see.” She reached for my arm and gave it a squeeze that wasn’t meant to be anything but friendly but held something more, something in the pressure in her fingertips and the depths of her eyes. It was something I did my very best to ignore. But I felt the heat of those fingertips long after they were gone, even as we sat across the table from each other eating lunch, the tulips in the vase behind her bowing their long heads as the sunlight illuminated them, exposing what was hidden within their petals.

About the Author

Staci has been a lot of things up to this point in her life -- a graphic designer, an entrepreneur, a seamstress, a clothing and handbag designer, a waitress. Can't forget that. She's also been a mom, with three little girls who are sure to grow up to break a number of hearts. She's been a wife, though she's certainly not the cleanest, or the best cook. She's also super, duper fun at a party, especially if she's been drinking whiskey. From roots in Houston to a seven year stint in Southern California, Staci and her family ended up settling somewhere in between and equally north, in Denver. They are new enough that snow is still magical. When she's not writing, she's reading, sleeping, gaming, or designing graphics.

 About THE FORTUNATE ONES

At Twin Oaks Country Club, there are the fortunate ones, and then there are the rest of us: the waiters, the caddies, the valets, and in my case, the cabana girls. Most days, I’m poolside in a pleated skirt, dishing out margaritas to tycoons and titans. It’s not exactly my dream job, but it does come with one perk…
James Ashwood.
He’s my silver lining in a custom black suit.
Besides being a legacy member at the club, he’s a tech mogul and Austin’s most eligible bachelor. Oh, and those dimples? Yeah, they make my stomach dip too.
On good days, I catch his sleek Porsche winding down the tree-lined drive. On better days, I steal a glimpse of his handsome profile as we pass in the hall. And on the absolute best day, I find him alone at the bar, looking for company.
“Come have a seat.”
Those four little words set me down a path I never could have imagined. Private planes, penthouse suites, and temptations around every corner make it impossible to keep my distance. His world feels decadent and wild—but overindulgence comes with a cost. Every kiss comes with strings. Every erotic encounter is a promise I’m not ready to keep.
When I pump the brakes, he hits the gas. James doesn’t want to go slow—he wants a commitment.
And the thing about the fortunate ones?
They’re used to getting what they want.

“I missed you today,” he says, his heated gaze lingering on my body. I step back, and he follows. He looks like he’s cornering his prey. “Apparently not enough to make it to dinner,” I point out icily. “I called the restaurant and told them I’d be late. Didn’t they tell you?” I cross my arms and glance away. “Brooke.” He steps closer and gently lifts my chin, forcing me to look back at him. “Fight with me tomorrow.” I narrow my eyes, angry with him for shelving this discussion so casually. To him, it doesn’t matter that I sat in that restaurant alone, looking like a fool for nearly two hours. He’s brushing off my anger, stepping closer and forcing his way past my defenses. “I think I’d like to talk about it now.” I catch the beginning of a smirk just before he leans in to kiss my cheek. “Are you sure there isn’t anything you’d rather be doing right now?” He uncrosses my arms and brings them up over his shoulders then steps closer, towering over me. My arms tighten around his neck, but still, I turn away, keeping my mouth from him. His breath hits my neck and he pulls me taut against his hard body, growing more impatient with every moment I try to resist. “Brooke,” he whispers huskily. My eyes flutter closed as he bends and presses a kiss to my cheek, my chin, then lower, tipping my head back so he can reach the smooth recess at the nape of my neck. I shiver and he groans, obviously aware of what his touch is doing to me.

3 stars

The Fortunate Ones was a decent read. James and Brooke’s relationship was an intriguing one. James and Brooke were on opposite tracks of life but seeing how they navigate through everything was fun. I was truly surprised on how the story went. It definitely made the book a little more interesting and that was good. Overall, a nice read with pleasant characters.
