AMIE'S 4 STAR REVIEW

Great start to a new series by HJB. I have read her before and have enjoyed her writing styles , love her cowboys , her townies and now have fallen for her fighters !! Layla and Cruz both have some pretty big secrets haunting them. Layla has come back home and immediately falls into the arms of Cruz. She is heartbroken and devastated and regardless of who her dad is Cruz attempts to swoop in and be her strength. Of course he is her dad's new fighter and we all know how dads feel about daughters so this could get pretty messy. The family business doesn't allow for Layla to escape Cruz so why not give into the attraction because it is HOT HOT HOT. Of course because this is a story nothing is cut and dry. Layla's ex is everywhere she looks and his temper is NOT one to be messed with. Her mother left her when she was a kid and now all of a sudden she comes around. It seems she isn't safe and of course Cruz would mess up everything to protect her because  they fell fast. There is some graphic violence in here not just from the fighting aspect but also due to some abuse. There is heartache and redemption and although at times it seems to be hopeless we do get some happiness. I look forward to what comes next in the series because lets face it - sweaty hot fighters !!!!!!!

If I thought I was going to make a speedy getaway, I was wrong. My savior caught up to me, half way down the walk, outside the finance building. He was quick and a large hand wrapped around my upper arm.

“Whoa, sister,” he said, slightly out of breath. “You almost got away from me again.”

“What?” I questioned. I had no idea what he meant: again.

“Never mind,” he muttered, his hand still on me. I looked down at it and he immediately released me. My eyes pinched as I realized I didn’t mind his hand on my skin. There was something nonthreatening about him. He seemed rather innocent, studious, actually. His shirt was buttoned almost to the top and tucked into his pants. The sleeves secure at the cuffs. His jeans were snug and hugged him well. He wore dark rimmed glasses that screamed smart. Brown boots looked too new on his large feet. It was like he had the right parts but the wrong combination.

His blue eyes were soft and easy to look into. They practically spoke to me, but I had no idea what he was saying. His dark hair was disheveled, a bit shaggy, but cool looking. He kind of looked like a pop star, which was a little too sugar sweet for me. His form was questionable. It was hard to tell what kind of body he had under those clothes. He looked rather preppy, like half the guys at this university. I didn’t want to think about it. I’d just sold my soul for another semester.

“So when do you want to do this?” I asked. His blank stare told me he had no idea what I meant.

“Us,” I said, pointing between him and me.

“I…” His voice trailed off as he gawked at me. His expression changed from confusion to shock.

“I didn’t buy you to sleep with you,” he said, a touch of disbelief in his voice. His face turned crimson, then fell. “Why, have you done that before?” It was my turn to be surprised and offended.

I turned on my heels and began stomping away from him. He was too quick and he caught me again. His hand on my arm halted me. This time he didn’t release me when I peered down at his fingers wrapped around my bicep.

“Look. I need help,” he blurted. His face pinked a little, and it was sweet. “I don’t need help with sex. I need help with before.” His tone dropped, and he looked side to side to see if anyone would hear him. I took his meaning.

“You don’t know how to do foreplay?” I questioned in a loud whisper, trying to hide my astonishment. How could anyone have sex and not know a touch of foreplay?

His face pinked again.

“Not that,” he said, sounding like a child. “The flirting. The dating. The…other stuff.”

I was stunned. I stared at him, taking in his features again. He was kind of cute, leaning toward the potential for good looking. He couldn’t possibly need help with this request. The confusion on my face made him speak.

“I don’t know how to flirt.” The words swirled between us.

“I don’t understand.” I didn’t. I didn’t know what he wanted from me.

“I need lessons how to be…cool: with girls. Call it a tutoring session. I need to learn how to be…seen.” His voice took on a touch of sadness. He couldn’t possibly be serious. I continued to stare at him. My mouth might have actually dropped open a bit, and I noticed he was watching my lips. It was a little exciting the way he stared at them. I licked them and his pupils dilated, filling in more black over the blue. His expression changed. Knowingly, he blinked when he realized I was teasing him. His lip quirked up and a dimple showed in his cheek.

“I need to date you,” he blurted. “To learn how to do, what you just did to me.”

REVIEW

I received this ARC in return for a honest review.

This is not the first book from L.B. that I have both read and reviewed and please let me start out by saying that I am becoming a fan. She has a certain way of getting a story across that tends to pull at your heartstrings and then make you want to turn around and scream at the same time.

Paradise Fought is the first in a new series and it follows two brothers Cain and Abel, however the first book is centered around Abel. Abel is the classic younger brother, nothing like his alpha male brother Cain, he was always that one overlooked. Years of torture from his father leaves a nasty taste in Abel's mouth and he is intent on making a name for himself. He doesn't need his big brother to come to his rescue anymore, or does he?

Elma always had the good life, never having to worry about anything. Until her big brother (the family's major bread-winner) is killed in a fight. With this new look on life, Elma is now forced to become the bread-winner of the family due to her mother's alcoholism. But when money gets tight and college tuition due, Elma will make a bargain that she soon regrets.

With a fateful meeting, these two soon start on a rocky road of friendship and both discover that everyone and everything is not always what it seems.  Lies will be told, truths will be discovered and family ties will be tested in this series.

Please know that although this is book 1 in the series, it could be read as a standalone but will leave you with a few questions as to what will happen with the supporting characters (i.e. Cain).

Can't wait for Cain's story to come out! Great Job!

REVIEW

Believe is book 2 in the Oni Fighters series, and it overlaps with book 1. That usually bothers me in a series because it involves too much retelling of the same storyline. In this case, Dane has his own thing going on, and there are very few parts of the story that are actually retold. This book was well-written, and dealt with some complex issues such as bullying and domestic abuse. I absolutely loved Isaac, Arianne’s son, and he stole my heart from the beginning. While this is a very good story, I would have liked to see more resolution to Isaac’s bullying issues at school. I also felt somewhat cheated on Marcel’s involvement. Both of these issues probably stem from my strong desire to see Arianne stand up for herself more rather than relying on Dane to save her. Don’t get me wrong, Dane is awesome knight in shining armor material. Even with these minor personal issues, I enjoyed this 4 star read.

After reading Brave, I was very excited to learn more about Dane. His character was not explored much in the first book, but the little I saw made me more than curious. Dane has always felt like he was just your average guy and recently started to feel the need to challenge himself more and discover his own potential. There is this part of him that is worried he will regret not trying more in life. Dane is a great guy who can be super hot in many ways—definitely in the sexy time ways in case you are wondering. I really enjoyed getting to know his character better in this book, and loved his combination of sweet and sexy. I had trouble connecting with him and Arianne as a couple because I just didn’t bond with her. There were several moments when I felt she was being completely unreasonable and wondered why Dane was putting up with it. She did come around near the end, and I found myself liking her more, but still didn’t fall in love with her as the heroine in this story.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

REVIEW

Brave is book one in the Oni Fighters series. This is a very emotional story with a lot of action and some fairly steamy scenes mixed in. I really enjoyed this 4.5 star read. On the surface it appears that Eden and Xander are very different, but I soon found they were kindred spirits in many ways. Both were fighting demons, even if it was not obvious at all times. This book deals with a lot of complex issues. I loved the build up to Xander and Eden’s relationship as well as their interactions. The only part of their relationship that bothered me was how it seemed as if Eden’s life wasn’t really moving forward without Xander in it.

Eden was on her way to a modeling career—had just signed the contracts—when she was badly burned in a fire. After the fire, she retreated from the world and rarely made it out of her own home if she could avoid it. When Xander enters the picture he pushes Eden to move forward with her life. I liked Eden’s character for the most part, but I would have liked to see her stick up for herself more. It felt that she was constantly having others come to her defense instead.

Xander is the owner of a martial arts school and appears to have everything together. At least that’s what Eden thinks when she first meets him. In reality Xander has his own demons, and while Xander is trying to help Eden fight hers, she is able to make him realize he’s been avoiding dealing with his own. I loved Xander throughout the entire book. He was sexy, sweet, and an all around good person. All in all, he was five star book boyfriend material.

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
