Tally is a twenty-year-old single mother struggling to finish nursing school. Has she made mistakes in life? Sure, but her daughter isn’t one of them. She works hard, she studies even harder, and she’s only a few weeks away from graduating. She’s living her life the best she knows how when she witnesses a near miss motorcycle accident between a car and a biker. A biker that happens to be the most talked about teacher at her college. The moment she meets those startling blue, narrowly-escaped-death eyes, she realizes quickly that life as she knows it has changed. No longer will she be content to let life pass her by, even if it puts everything she’s worked so hard for in jeopardy. *** Tommy is a highly skilled doctor. A teacher. A veteran. A fully-patched member of The Dixie Wardens MC. He’s lonely, but also set in his ways. What will it take for this man to accept that he needs to make some changes in his life? Apparently, it’ll take a guy in a truck, who’s preoccupied with his phone rather than focused on the road, nearly plowing into him on his bike at seventy miles per hour. Oh, and a twenty-something year old nursing student witnessing the entire thing from only a few feet away. It only takes a second, a single heartbeat in time, as he looks into her worry-filled eyes to realize that he’d give anything for a single night with her. He may lose his job in the process, but after that one incredible night turns into an amazing weekend, he knows it’s worth the risk for the promise of her forever.

“As I was saying before I was so rudely interrupted, your first clinical in the ER might be somewhat overwhelming. That’s to be expected. However, over time you will learn the ropes, find your stride, and realize that it isn’t some big scary place that will swallow you alive.” Dr. Tommy—I refused to call him Dr. Bones anymore—continued.
I started doodling on my paper, drawing curls and swirls around mine and Tallulah’s names.

I’d just made a fourth star when a large tanned hand came and snatched the pen out of my hand.
“I can see now why your pen ran out of ink.” Dr. Tommy stared down at me with barely restrained impatience.
My face flushed.
If it were possible to sink into the floor in completely embarrassment, I would’ve done it. Right then and there.
Jesus Christ.

“I think you should see me after class.” He murmured.

My brows furrowed.
I hadn’t done anything wrong.
Looking over to Hadley, she returned a sympathetic smile before turning her head down to her own work.

“Okay.” I finally said. “I’ll see you after class.”

He nodded once, but kept his pen.
Irrational anger followed me throughout the rest of class, and by the time that it ended, I was beside myself.
“Do you want me to wait?” Hadley asked.
I shook my head.
“No.” I snapped. “I have to go to work after this anyway. I just hope he doesn’t make me late.”
Hadley packed her book into her bag, gave me a worried look, and then left without another word.
I stayed in my seat once my bag was packed, waiting to see what Dr. McAsshole had to say.
Once the last person escaped, he stopped erasing the board, (and yes, I was admiring his ass if you were wondering) he turned and crossed his thick, muscular arms over his chest.
“The other teachers give you glowing recommendations.” He started saying.

I licked my lips.

“Uh, thank you?”

I didn’t know what to say, nor where he was going with this.

“I wanted you to understand that I won’t tolerate this kind of behavior when I have you in my ER.”
I blinked.
Then blinked again.

“Uhhhh,” I started to say, but he interrupted me.

“You’ll be starting on your nurse internship next week. You’ll be there two days out of the week, twelve hour shifts, and always under me or Dr. Wild.”

I blinked some more.

“I…I got it?” I finally was able to get out.
He nodded his head.
“Though I expect that has more to do with who your mother is than whether you are actually qualified or skilled enough to be there.”

My mouth dropped open in affront.
“Oh, I assure you that I am skilled and qualified enough to be there.” My back straightened. “Is that all?”
I could’ve sworn I saw his lips twitch at my show of anger, but no other signs were apparent.

“Yes, that’ll be all.”
I nodded and stood, throwing my bag on my shoulder and practically stomping toward the door.
He stopped me, though, the moment I was about to exit fully.

“Thank you.”

I froze, and turned.
“For what?” I asked stiffly.

“For not running over me this morning. Thank you for paying attention.”
I didn’t bother to answer him.
Otherwise I might’ve said that I now wished that I hadn’t been paying attention.

Mother fucker.

Who did he think he was?
My mother wouldn’t stoop so low as to get her daughter a job…would she?

EXCERPT:

“It really boils down to one thing,” Simone said. “Do you trust him?” She made it sound so easy, but as I examined my feelings and tore apart his words, dissected his actions, I realized that I did. Mostly. There were plenty of things not to trust him about—anytime he came near me with his cock at the ready and a belt or whip in his fist, for instance—but on a fundamental level, I did trust him. If I didn’t, why would I keep putting myself through this? Why keep bending and bending and bending? “I do trust him,” I said, swiping my bangs to the side. “I love him. More than I could ever say. More than even makes sense.” “Then I’d put the baby mama out of your head. He married you, and though I won’t begin to understand or approve of your…weird relationship, he has always come across as pretty fucking whipped.” I almost spluttered my tea all over the table at her words. Gage, whipped? But the more I thought about it, the more it clicked, because when you got down to the nitty-gritty, we had each other wrapped. “I guess you’re right. I just wish I could get that woman out of my head. The way she touches him, and the way she glares at me…God, Simone, she makes me see red and green at the same time.” “You need a fucking hobby.” Simone’s mouth twisted into a scowl, but her gaze softened as she said it to take out some of the sting. “A hobby?” I asked, absently picking at my half-eaten quiche. Apparently, the subject of Katherine made me lose my appetite. Or maybe it was the smell of overcooked cheese. I pushed the plate away, scrunching my nose. “Why do you say that?” Simone made a scoffing sound, and I glanced up to find her reclined in her seat, arms crossed. “To hear you talk, it sounds like your whole life revolves around Gage and what he may or may not be doing with Katherine.” A hobby might not be a bad idea. Maybe I could start collecting trinkets, like dolphins or dragons. Or elephants. Definitely elephants. Lord knew I had plenty of those in my life. Gigantic ones that ate up too much space and sucked up all the air. One stood between Gage and me in the form of Katherine. But the biggest one sat smack in the middle of Simone and me. This elephant’s name was Ian, and he’d grown too secure in his comfy spot since that damn note had magically appeared on my door. But it was easier, safer, to focus on my marriage and the interloper named Katherine. The subject of Ian was too dangerous. Too painful. Simone must have agreed because she didn’t bring him up once.

SIX BROTHERS

EACH HOLDING A DIFFERENT BADGE OF THE LAW

EACH SWORN TO SERVE AND PROTECT

trust; firm belief in the reliability, truth, ability, or strength of someone or something.

LAPD Detective Reid Cunningham is content to keep the pain of losing his best friend buried deep. Dedicated to his job, he doesn’t have time to feel.

Much less love.

But when the past comes knocking at his door, he has no choice but to face his deepest and darkest fear.

Cassidy Sky, his best friend’s little sister, needs his help. Reid promised to watch over her and keep her safe, but he never planned on giving her his heart.

Or his trust.

PLEASE NOTE: The author recommends reading The Officer’s Promise, an introduction to the Brothers in Blue, prior to reading the remaining five books of the series.

The Detective's Trust is written from dual POV, with an HEA and no cheating.

Excerpt #1

We’d only been on the road for half an hour but you could cut the tension with a knife. To think when I woke up this morning, I was completely high on this man, but right now I wanted to choke the shit out of him.
I learned pretty quickly that Reid Cunningham was not a morning person. He needed at least two cups of coffee before he should be allowed to interact with humans.
Plus, I was pretty sure he was still pissed about what I was wearing. He’d asked me twice to change before we left the hotel, but I’d refused and that didn’t help his extreme level of grouchiness whatsoever. But I could care less how he felt about my attire. If the only words he was going to utter to me were demands then he could go straight to hell.
I didn’t see what the big deal was. It was just a romper. When I left Florida for California, I’d packed light—sundresses and rompers. Cute and comfy. That was my style. I’d brought along a denim jacket to ward off any chill but it wasn’t necessary. Just being in the same car with him made me hot.
And not in a good way.
I wasn’t sure which part he hated the most. The ruffled eyelet hem that grazed my upper thighs or the top half, which was low-cut with spaghetti straps. My breasts were small enough I didn’t have to wear a bra. The anger in his eyes only intensified when his eyes drifted to either. Sure, it showed a lot of skin, but I wanted him to look.
I wanted him to eat his stubborn heart out.
I wanted him to regret the way he treated me this morning when we woke up. He’d given me the cold shoulder, only giving me short, one-word answers, and even though I’d asked twice more, he still wouldn’t tell me why the hell we were driving all the way to Texas.
“Are you going to be like this all day?”
“Like what?” he grumbled.
“Like you’re pissed at the world.”
He muttered under his breath before pulling over on the side of the road and getting out of the car. I watched him pace back and forth before I unbuckled my seatbelt and opened the door.
I’d barely made it out when he snapped. “Get back in the car.”
Slamming the door, I walked toward him. “No, I want to know what your problem is.”
“Nothing. Get your ass back in the car. Now.”
“Stop barking orders at me. I’m not a fucking dog.”
He stopped pacing and fixed his eyes on me. “I do not treat you like a dog.”
“Yes, you do. You ordered me to change clothes. You won’t tell me why we’re going to Texas. You just expect me to do whatever the hell you say. And you won’t talk to me about last night.”
“There’s nothing to talk about.”
“We spent the night together.”
“So.”
“So?”
He exhaled a long, frustrated sigh, dragging the palm of his hand through his hair. “I told you before, the only thing I can offer you is protection.”
“Oh God, don’t tell me you’re one of those guys.”
“Meaning?”
“The asshole who acts like an asshole because he thinks he’s not worthy enough, has too many demons to battle, and feels the need to fight them alone.”
“You hit the nail on the head, baby. I’m exactly that guy. And I’m going to lay it all out for you, I’m not the guy for you.”
“But you want me.”
He narrowed his eyes. “Listen, I’m not trying to be a dick.”
“Too late for that,” I tossed out, folding my arms across my chest.
“Fine, then I’m a dick, but at least I’m an honest dick.”
“You’re not being honest. You want me; you’re just too chickenshit to admit it.”
“Get in the damn car,” he said, stalking toward it. “I’m tired of arguing with you on the side of the damn road.”
“God, why do you have to be such an asshole?”
“Why do you have to be so goddamn beautiful?”
He didn’t mean to say it. I could tell by the shocked expression that slipped over his face, but he’d admitted it all the same.
I blinked. “You think I’m beautiful?”
He shook his head, a faint smile tugging at the corner of his lips. “You’re such a brat, you know that?”
I smiled. “But a beautiful brat?”
“Get your beautiful, bratty ass in the car. Please.”
“Holy cheese, he said please!’”
Once inside, he blew out a heavy breath and fixed his eyes on mine. “I do want you. More than I’ve ever wanted anyone, but I would only hurt you, Cass. I—I can’t be what you need.”
“You don’t know what I need.”
“Trust me, I know.”

Excerpt #2

Once we were inside, I moved to the bed closest to the door and began emptying my pockets on the nightstand while Cassidy snatched up her bag with a huff and went straight into the bathroom.
When she walked out a few moments later, I knew for sure God was punishing me.
“What the hell are you wearing?" I asked, my dick hardening against my zipper.
She looked down at her chest, a grin smarting that sassy mouth of hers. "A shirt."
One finger curled at the hem of my favorite Yankees shirt I’d had packed in my bag, the ball of her foot twisting in place while she licked her lips.
Teasing me.
Luring me to the edge of a very steep cliff.
I wanted to know what that finger tasted like. No doubt it tasted as sweet as she smelled.
Like goddamn candy.
The kind you have to suck the sour to get to the sweet.
Every part of me wanted to devour every inch of her. Not to mention how good she would look underneath me. The images funneled through my mind in quick succession, one after the other. The countless ways I could make her mine. But the guilt still remained. Nestled somewhere between want and need.
I wanted her, but she needed my help.
I promised Bodie.
Desire gnawed at my resolve, but I stayed rooted in place. Her dark eyes peeked up at me as she made her way over, determination heavy in her gaze. "You don't like my shirt?"
"It's mine," I growled.
"I know." She stopped in front of me, reaching for my hand and placing it between her legs. "And so is this." Standing on her tiptoes, her lips brushed my cheek, breath hot in my ear. "If you want it."
The heat of her pussy paired with the damp fabric between her legs snapped my pathetic control. Leaning down, I captured her lips, her pliant body sagging against mine. My promise to Bodie was washed away as her taste flooded my mouth, a hint of tequila mixed with lime and a pound of need that rivaled my own. There was no more pain, no more guilt.
Just…her.
Raising my other hand, I brought it to the back of her neck, gently grasping the strands of her soft, silky hair before giving them a hard tug. Her head fell back with a gasp, breaking our heated kiss, and my mouth descended on her neck with greed, my fingers stroking over her wet panties.
“I want to take you here and now,” I told her.
"Reid, please. I'm begging you."
"What do you want, Cassidy? And you better be very specific."
She moved her hand to my cock, stroking and squeezing me through the rough denim of my jeans. "This specific enough for you?"
Her words fell on a whisper, stripping away any remaining hope of ever escaping what I knew deep down had been inevitable all along.

REVIEWED BY JILL

5 stars for Detective's Trust - the second book in the Brother's In Blue series. While this is the second book in the series it can be read as a complete stand-alone as each book features one of the Cunningham brothers and does have a HEA. Author K. Langston's work is new-to-me, but I can safely say she is someone I will definitely read more from in the future since this book is one I could NOT put down. This book has something for everyone with mystery, angst filled romance and danger lurking all around. Do yourself a favor and pick up book one - The Officer's Promise - too!
Cassidy Sky was sixteen-years-old when she saw her best friend and older brother Bodie murdered. Now seven years later the man she testified against is released from prison and is out to get her for sending him away. The only person Cassidy can trust is her brother's best friend - Reid. He is also the only man she has ever loved, but she is going to keep that last part to herself for the time being.
Reid Cunningham moved to Los Angeles to surf and became pretty darn good at it until his best friend was murdered. When Bodie died Reid changed and decided to take up the family business eventually joining the LAPD. Reid works tirelessly, but when Cass comes to him fearing for her life she takes the center stage in his life. Reid has always wanted Cassidy and it is harder now more than ever to stay away from her.
Loved this fast paced romantic suspense with tons of smoking hot romance! Then we meet tons of enigmatic characters that are interesting and likable which makes us want to know more. Can't wait for the next one in this series!
